This is our wedging table and it is constructed out of three to four inches of plaster, with a wooden frame around it and a canvas cover stretched on top. It's an absorbent surface and the canvas prevents chips of plaster from embedding in the moist clay, which can cause problems in the drying and firing stages. Today we're going to be wedging up two pieces of clay. One for the body of the pot and the other one for the lid. The wedging procedure simply involves standing directly over the piece, pushing down, bringing it back, pushing it down, and repeating this action. What we want accomplish, is to have pleats of clay, butted up against each other. We do not want to overlap the clay. That would cause air bubbles in the clay. The reason for wedging is to distribute the moisture content throughout the clay and to remove any air bubbles in the clay. Once we wedge thoroughly, the body of the pot, we can go on to wedge the lid. Same technique, push down, roll back, push down, roll back.
