"The lip of the platter is fairly important for two reasons. One, visually, it says this is where the form ends, and functionally you want to have a strong lip so it maintains its symmetry in the drying and the firing stages. One of the ways to do that is, again, we're going to work with the rounded rib to just smooth out an area, and then, keeping your right finger supporting, and your left hand with the rib, you're just going to turn over a little section of clay there, and that will give it an angle, a change in direction, which stabilizes the clay. And we're going to go back with our sponge, round out the edge on that lip, and then, with the opposite end of our wooden trim tool, we can make a slight indentation to further accent the lip."
