"Okay now another type of tip up is the trap line tip up or horizontal tip up. It's set up a little bit different as I mentioned earlier. It has a horizontal reel on it and the rod twists to let go of the flag. In order to set this up, you might use this on something like walleye or large slabber perch. Onto that you might have a six inch leader and simply by taking your hook, your perfection end of your loop and hooking it through, and then doubling back on itself. You basically come up with a hook that's attached directly to a six foot monofilament leader. Now for this to work out on a particularly windy day like we've got today, we hook this on the larger side of the notch. On a less windy day there's a small notch right here and on a less windy day you want to set that. It's a little more gentle setting. But on a windy day like we have today you want to set it in this harder notch. Now when the fish comes along underneath and is pulling on this. They will pull on the line spinning the reel and setting the flag off. This is a trap style horizontal tip up and it is used a lot of times for large slabber perch as well as walleye. So you could use it on salmon as well, but I prefer the cross set up with a vertical spring."
