"Before we begin I want to talk to you a little bit about safety. Woodworking and woodturning can be dangerous and before you use any machinery or woodworking tools in your shop make sure that you have read and understand the manuals on how to operate them safely. When I work in my shop I always wear my safety glasses and I always wear my face shield when I am turning on the lathe. I also like to wear gloves on my left hand and you can see the fingers are cut off and that is to insure that nothing gets caught by the turning materials that are on the lathe. When you are turning on the lathe make sure that you are not wearing any loose clothing or any jewelry that is hanging from the neck or from your wrists because there is a risk that that could get caught in the material that is spinning on the lathe and you could be injured. Please make sure that you never try to work when you are tired or if you have consumed alcohol or have taken any drugs. Woodturning can be dangerous and some day we may have an opportunity to meet and when we shake hands I would like for you to be able to do it with all five of your fingers."
