"I always think it's interesting to look at where we start from when we see where we're going. So in drawing numerals, or writing numerals, we're starting with a system of notation that actually was based upon letters. So the first numbering system was the Roman numeral system. So we're really talking about numbers that looked like this. I see I've got a little bit of fuzz on my pen. So these are the numbers that preceded the numbers that we're going to learn. So we had Ms, and Cs, and Vs, and Ds and they were written just as Roman letters were written. Now they worked just fine until we started doing math. And when math came into the picture, these were much too awkward to accommodate the large number systems that were used."
