"So once I have my hollow dye properly situated so that it's got a nice, even and lined up area, I'm going to hook this on to the base of the extruder, and then I'm going to take this cylinder of clay that I prepared, drop it in the top, take the plunger up, and drop that in as well. Now the first couple of plunges, nothing's going to come out. The clay is just conforming to the shape of the barrel, but once to start to feel some significant pressure, it's going to start extruding. And it usually curves a little bit as it first comes out, so if you want a straight piece, you're going to have to straighten it out and let it set up, to leather hard. In this case we don't need it to be straight because the curve is actually kind of a fun thing for the vase. So I'm going to cut this piece off, and I'm going to set it to the side, gently. And then I'll extrude a couple more pieces. So now I've got my extruded pieces, and I can put these together and make a vase."
