Video: How to Extrude Clay Handles

Sometimes it is easier to use a tool to make handles than your hands. Learn tips on how to properly use a clay extruder to make handles for a chicken baker from a clay pottery expert in this free video clip.

So once you have got your dye holder on there, you want to get underneath it and make sure that it is positioned correctly so that no part of your handle is going to be cut off. Then you take your lump of clay and drop it right in the barrel, take the plunger up and let it slide into the barrel and in the first couple of pushes with this lever are not going to push anything out the bottom because it is just letting the clay settle into the form of the cylinder. But then once the clay does start to come out, you just push slowly until it is about the length that you want and what I like to do is have a board near by so that I can transport these handles to whatever location I need them to be in. It is also a good idea to go ahead and extrude everything that is in there, even if you do not need that many handles right now. You can cover them in plastic and as long as you keep them moist, you can save them for a very long time, until the next project that you are going to use handles. So I am just going to finish extruding everything here and then I will show you how to use these.
