Series Summary

Teaching your dog to do the most basic commands like lie down and stay can be a difficult challenge. Many dog-training methods implement the same strategy of positive reinforcement. When the dog obeys the command, it gets an award or treat, thus reinforcing the obedience of the command. While your pet dog may not need to learn advanced skills, it should master certain commands such as come, sit and stay, and how to walk on the leash. Get tips for training dogs to lay down, come, stay, and walk on a leash in this free video series on dog training featuring dog trainer Carol Underwood. She will demonstrate how to train a dog to lay down, how to teach a dog to lay down and stay down, how to teach a dog to come on a leash, and how to teach a dog to walk on a leash.

Video Transcript

"This is Roby, she's a year old pit bull that I've just met. She's been here about ten minutes, and I'm allowing her to show the behavior she's been allowed to have in her present state of mind. See her owner is rewarding her for jumping up on the chair. But, what we're looking at is, she's been here, actually twenty minutes now. She has just now taken her tail out from between her legs. We have two pit bulls next door who do charge the fence. So we have a bit of negative energy coming over. And we're going to see about what we can do with her behaviorally in the next few minutes. As well as get her started in her education. She knows to sit for a treat. She does live with two other dogs and she has been social to this point. But we're going to see if we can increase her confidence level and bring her into a safe round of obedience."
