"When I'm teaching a dog to back up, I will actually create a channel for them to help them to learn to back up straightly. And how I do that is I start with the come command with the dog at one end and myself at the other as you see here. Come. Good. Now dogs are very sensitive to body language, so if I move into her when she's not overacting, then she is likely to back up for me. Back, good. And the minute she takes a step, I'm going to reward her for that. Good. I'll call her to me again, and then I'll try it again. Good, good, good. And I'm rewarding her when she backs up on all fours. As you see, she's ready to do some other tricks and try to see if she can get the treat the other way instead of with the new trick. So I'm making sure that I'm rewarding her when she is backing up with her feet and not by jumping up. Come, good."
