"In addition to establishing rules to manage the disruptive students, it is essential that you have consequences for breaking the rules. Have you thought about that? Okay. "Well, these are the rules and I expect everyone to follow them". Well, that's great and fine and good and we talked about the syllabus and rules the first day of class. But perhaps the students along the way into the semester might forget the rules. Obviously, you can remind them of the rules, but what are the consequences for the student who continually have a side conversations? What are the consequences for the student who continues to text message her boyfriend in your course? What are the consequences for the student who is twenty minutes late every single class period. You have to establish this as well and make them clear to the student early on. It's just like attendance. I'm very strict on attendance in my courses because my courses are about participation. I allow one absence the entire semester. And for every three tardies, you get an absence. So I make that very clear early on and I continually remind students who are continually tardy, that they are racking up absences and after one absence you lose a letter grade in my course. So establish the rules. Establish the consequences. Make them clear verbally and in writing and constantly remind the students."
