"Now let's talk about students who exhibit disruptive behavior. And this could be a wide range of things from side conversations, negative comments about you or other students. Very worst case scenario, students cell phones ringing, or students texting, sending text messages in your class, which is the one I deal with the most. Be very very clear on your rules of what is acceptable in your classroom and what is not. And establish this early on. Put it in your syllabus and verbally speak it to the students. What is acceptable? Side conversations, cell phones, negative remarks to other students, address all of the things that are not o.k. in your classroom. But most importantly, you then must enforce those rules. Whatever you establish is o.k. or not o.k., you then have to enforce it. And you have to make equal enforcement.
