"Another option that you might want to consider, is evaluations, and when I talk about evaluations in this context, you might want to, at the end of every semester, you get evaluations, and you might want to save your evaluations. Pick two or three of them, that would be applicable to resistant students, and read them on the first day of class. Perhaps a former student has written comments like, I really didn't want to take this class. I thought I didn't need it. I thought it was stupid, but I can't believe how much I learned in this course. Another thing that you can do besides reading evaluations from former students, is actually bring a former student in, to talk to your class, and give them a live evaluation. I'm like you. I thought this was the dumbest class I had to take. I couldn't believe it when they told me in the advising center that I had to have this class, but let me tell you what you're going to learn about. Let me tell you how I've used my skills that I learned in this class, to land a job, or to function in the real world, and a lot of time students will respond to that, because that is their peer level. Oh ok, well you know, the teacher of course, is going to tell me how great the class is, but people who were in the same situation as me, people that I can relate to, are talking about the benefits of the class. Hmm, maybe I'll give this class a chance."
