"The next thing you want to do with your students who are resistant, is recognize the need for improvement, and what I'm talking about is the students that, well, I already know this. I've already taken this course. I mastered this subject in high school. I don't need to have this course. I already know all the material, which if you are a college professor, you know you're going to run into this problem, because many students at that particular age, the younger age, think they know everything, and they don't need to learn any more material on this subject. What you want to do, is let them know that they possibly could have mastered this course. They have excelled in this course in high school, but there is always room for improvement. You have learned it, but can you master it? Can you improve on the skills that you've already learned and challenge them to do that? Challenge them to take their mastery, and take it to the next level. Get even better at it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and again, tie it in to the real world. In the real world, you need to be the absolute best that you can be, in as many areas that you can be the best in, so encourage them to improve, on what they already know."
