Summary: The first thing that needs to be done when choreographing a marching band show is choosing a theme. Learn how to choose a show theme for marching band in this free music video series.
"Hi, my name is Matt Goms we're talking about band choreography and getting started the first thing I'd probably do is, I would say you'd probably want to choose a theme for your show. Usually you have a beginning, middle and an end. What you are going to want is, typically, it's going to start with some sort of up tempo fast paced tune that is going to lead you through to the middle of the show and then in the middle of the show you're going to want to do something probably a little slower, like a ballad of some kind. And then of course end it with something a little more high paced again. That's typically the three kind of things you want. You can have more songs than that if their shorter but that's typically the way that you'd want to start it out. The first thing you want to do though, is choose that theme, decide what type of music is it going to be. Is it going to be some sort of Spanish theme or is it going to be all jazz. If so, what tunes are you going to use? Those are the first things you want to decide."
