Summary: Tenkan is an important technique to use to avoid a side kick. Learn how to use Tenkan to defend a side kick in this free Aikido video featuring a 4th degree black belt.
"We've looked at some irimi, some entering techniques, but what about turning? Turning's got to be important, right? We do either entering or we do techniques turning. If I've got multiple attackers, this is the time when the side kick or the tenkan for the side kick can come in handy. As he throws the kick I can simply move out of the way and move on to my next attacker, if there is another attacker. What I like to do, slow, is as that kick comes in, catch this kick and just continue moving him around forward. It's kind of a neat little technique. Here. Other side. Right side. Here, just like this, and just keep moving him forward and move on out to the next attacker. One of the important things again, is making sure that when that kick comes in, it's past you. I will throw an atemi with this, just like that. It's a punch to the face, staying out of the way, and that way you can just ditch him and move on. One of the things that I'll do, you might say, "Well, I wouldn't leave a person laying on the ground like that." One of the things that I like to do as they are on the ground here, is simply step right on the back of their leg, just like this. There's a pressure point on the leg that actually will pin them to the ground."
