"Okay so now I have centered my two and a half pound ball of clay for the lid and the first thing we are going to do is open it to the center and I am going to push down with my left finger and my right finger simultaneously and pull outwards. I want to leave a little bit of thickness here at the base because this is where the knob is going to be on top and I need to leave some room for that. So I will take my needle tool, test the depth and I have got about 1/2 inch which is about what I want. Now the next thing you are going to want to do is I am going to kind of open a second time. I am going to push down with my fingers and pull out and now the purpose of this interior raised area is to give the lid some where to fit in the firing. I want the entire birdhouse to appear glazed at the end so something has to be waxed any time that you put something in the kiln so this will be what is waxed so I want this to be higher than the lid will actually be so I want to throw this interior cylinder up several inches. It needs to be thin enough that it will fit inside the hole of the other place that we just made. It doesn't have to fit it perfectly so it is better to have it a little too thin so that if anything warps they will still go together. Next we will throw the exterior part of the lid."
