The first thing you want to do when attaching a handle to a pitcher is kind of get an idea of how it is going to hang so you want to get down and kind of look at it and see where you want to cut the handle and you want to take something, I don't know you could use this or I could use a knife or anything and simply cut the handle off of the top, keeping in mind that it is a pitcher so you need to leave some of the thick piece on the top there. Now I'm going to situate my pitcher and look directly opposite of the spout over here and figure out the mark where this is going to go. Now I am going to place my handle right about there so I am simply going to mark it like so with my pin tool. I am going to look down and see where my handle is going to go to underneath and I'm going to mark that too so I have two marked spots. Now I am going to score the inside edge of my handle right there getting it nice and scored and I am going to do the same thing here using a cross hatch. You really want to get it nicely scored up and I am going to do the same thing down at the base here and again repeat the process at the point where I want this to meet the bottom of the pitcher. Now it is better to over score than to underscore. This is I suppose the base that is going to attach the two and then I want to cover both areas in slip like so making sure that there is plenty of slip on there. Inside here on the side of the pot simply painting it on all of the spots that I just scored like so. Now I am going to take my handle and place it on the top edge making sure I am lined up on the back side of the spout and simply press the handle into place making sure that it is nice and secure. I put my hand on the inside so I don't damage the pot while I am doing it. Now I am going to take my handle, keep it nice and rounded and take my edge and simply stick it down to the base of the pot. Once you have it in the right place like this or wherever you want it you are going to take your finger and really give it a good press right there, just hard enough to squeeze it on there nice and tight without actually pushing in to the pot. Now we can take this tool here and simply cut the base off. Now we might want to take the paint brush once we have done this as you can see we have this nice and secured there, press down. It is nice and secured up top and we can now take our paint brush and just smooth out any edges that are on there and get some slip around there to make sure it is on there nice and tight, smooth out the top edge and take any excess slip that is on there off or any grooves that might be there and fill them with slip and smooth it out. So now we have handled the pitcher as you can see and we have a place to pick it up with and pull. So the last section of this lesson I am going to talk about some basic tips that you might want to keep in mind to get this ready to be put into the kiln and we will be talking about that in the last section of this lesson.
