"Hello my name is Jeff Fiffie on behalf of Expert Village I'll be showing you how to perform basic fuel maintenance on your car. The purpose of your fuel filter is to clean your fuel before it reaching your engine. There are two basic types of fuel filters. There are in the tank fuel filters and there are in the line fuel filters. The in the tank fuel filters requires no maintenance, it's self cleaning. It is made up of woven plastic and requires no cleaning or no maintenance. The in the line filters are the ones that are saturated with contaminants. On an average of 15,000 miles it needs to be changed. This is an example of in the line fuel filter. Around that time it becomes filled with contaminants and can no longer be used to filter the fuel. A dirty fuel filter can lower your output, power output, and cause hesitation and hard starting. Also, dirty and contaminant fuel can easily clog your injectors and your fuel rail."
