Summary: When massaging a baby with colic, maintain safety by avoiding the tummy area if the umbilical cord is not healed, and performing the massage with the baby on the floor to prevent falling. Keep a baby with colic safe during a massage by laying them on comfortable blankets and pillows and using information from a parenting instructor in this free video on childcare.

"Some things to keep in mind when you're massaging your baby who may be experiencing colic are sort of the safety issues or some considerations that you might think about. One is if a baby's umbilical cord hasn't healed yet, we're not going to massage the tummy. So if that area hasn't healed, you can use some other nurturing touch which I will show you, but you're not going to actually do any massage stroking. So talk to your health care provider if you have any questions about that. The other thing that you may want to think about is when you're giving massage to make sure that your baby is laying low to the floor or on the floor. Again, comfortable, blanket underneath, pillows, making sure they are feeling cozy and safe. So lying on the floor on top of a blanket or a pillow can be nice, but when you put the oil on a baby, they get slippery. So if you have a baby up on a changing table or on top of your mattress on the bed or something like that, it's always possible they could roll off. So you want to be careful and have the baby low to the floor. And then also when your baby's experiencing colic, they can be very fussy, they can be very upset. So feel free at any time to take a break to meet the needs of yourself and your baby. You can do as much or as little massage that works for your baby and for you. So just take your time and take as many hug and cuddle breaks as you want."
