"You might want to try and you may have already heard of the idea of kind of white noise or a shushing sound can help to calm babies that are upset, that are crying. It is a sound that they hear in utero so it is very familiar to them and so this might be something that would be soothing for a baby that may be crying or just may be a little upset as something they recognize. So some ways that you might kind of obtain that sound, maybe in your own home using the vacuum cleaner, washer and dryer, a fan, a high speed fan can be something that makes that type of noise. You might also use a hair dryer. Now the one thing with a hair dryer, if you are using a hair dryer is always keep it on the full setting, always because even if you are using the hair dryer, point it away from baby which you always would do, point it away from the baby. They still might pick up some type of air or heat even if it is on the cool setting. What is cool to us may not always feel the same kind of coolness to a baby so if you are using your hair dryer to make that noise, keep it on cool and point it, keep it away from and point it away from baby. You never want to point a hair dryer at a baby. That air coming out of the hair dryer will feel very uncomfortable. So definitely keep that pointed away. Another thing you can do is you can just make the shushing sound yourself. Now it might feel kind of silly and look kind of silly but your baby won't think it is and so your shushing can even be that, saying shh, shh, shh, shh, shh and you can change the speed, you can change how loud you make that sound. You want to try to match the volume of how loud it is with how loud your baby's cries are. You can start out if your baby is crying rapidly, you can start your shushing at a more rapid pace and then start to slow it. If you start to slow it your baby may also. So you may start out shh, shh, shh, shh, shh and bring it down and start to calm down your shushing and this can help your baby to calm down too."
