"Rules of the tug. A lot of times you will hear that tug is not recommended for a dog because it will entice them to bite as hard as they can and pull so if you have a nipping problem with a dog obviously this may not be the toy or the game of choice. But if that is not the case you can have a lot of fun with tug as long as you set up rules. First it is going to be one item that tug plays with and that's it. So this is it, it is not going to be another toy and it is not going to be any other type of item. You are the one that brings it out and initiates the game and you are the one that ends the game. When I'm playing tug I will periodically have my dog stop and as soon as he lets go I'll have him sit, look up at me and then that starts the game again. This will keep the dog to where you are in control where it is not getting out of hand where the dog is jumping up and nipping or biting and again grabbing with his mouth as hard as he can. So it is a nice way to train your dog to have good skills to calm down when the game starts and when it stops."
