"These are called geometric solids. At the beginning of the year we always start with the three very basics. This is a cylinder. This is a cube. This is a sphere. The others come in later in the year. This is what we put out on the shelf at the beginning of the year. And we present it we hand it to the child and say, 'this is a cylinder, can you say cylinder?' And have them say cylinder, and they pass it to the next person and say cylinder. When that comes back we do the cube, 'this is a cube', hand it to the child have them say cube and pass it to the next person. 'This is a sphere', hand it to the child, have them say sphere and hand it to the next, until it gets all the way around the circle and back. Then I might call a child up and say, 'can you tell me which one is the cylinder?' and if they come up and aren't sure I kind of point a little bit and they usually will pick it up and say cylinder. And we keep playing that game until they have decided they know all the names to these. Then when they've mastered that the next point would be to say 'can you tell me what this is, can you tell me what this is?' It's a little bit more difficult for them if you haven't given them the name. These are the geometric solids."
