Series Summary

Sewing is an ancient craft that still has remarkable relevance in today's modern world. The art of stitching and assembling pieces of fabric together either by hand or with the use of a modern sewing machine is still a valuable skill and can be used for industry, home, or artistic purposes. Industrial sewing is usually done with the use of machines, but for seamstresses, alteration givers, and most casual sewers, an old fashioned needle and thread is still incredibly useful and more often than not the desired method since it enables far more detail. Tailoring and dressmaking require not only a needle and thread, but also other tools and materials that you can find easily at arts and crafts stores. In this free video series our craft expert and seamstress will teach you how to make a handmade rag doll. You will learn how to create a rag doll pattern and cut out the pattern from fabric. You will also learn how to make and attach rag doll hair, rag doll arms and legs and a rag doll mouth. You will also get tips for sewing each piece of the doll together and stuffing the doll with scraps of fabric and rags. If you are interested in a fun and creative sewing project, let our expert show you everything you need to know about rag doll making.

Video Transcript

"Hi, today we're going to show you how to make a rag doll. First, we're going to need to get our supplies together. This is a bigger version of the rag doll. It's a little bit more of what we're going to make today but it kind of gives you an idea of what kind of materials you're looking for. You're going to need the skin color and you'll need whatever you what to do for the bottoms. You'll need a pair of scissors. You'll need a pin and also you'll want to make sure have a needle to sew on the eyes unless you want to use your sewing machine which you will also need and you'll need a pencil for drawing out the patterns and for tracing pieces and you'll also need hair for your dolls so that you will have something to finish it off. A lot of times I use scraps I get for the hair also and if you have surgery, you will have tons of these little tinny scraps and those will also work. They'll kind of slowly fall off but they work too. That's what you're going to need for your supplies."
