Firefighters use specialized tools such as the Halligan bar and axe to forcibly enter burning buildings and rooms. Other tools such as the latch strap prevent firefighters from getting locked in burning buildings and the rooms with the buildings. Firefighters also use knives to cut seatbelts off victims in a passenger vehicle wreck and use spring loaded punch to break windows in a passenger window. See firefighting tools that firefighters use to fight fire and rescue victims in this free video series featuring professional firefighter Captain Joe Bruni. Captain Bruni explains the use of firefighting tools such as the latch strap, tool pouch, Halligan bar, pick headed axe, volatage tester, nylon webbing channel lock pliers, screwdriver, knife, flat headed axe, and spring loaded punch.
"Another one of those convenient tools and handy tools that a firefighter can carry is a good working sharp knife. Now there's many different types of knives on the market. Many firefighters like carrying some type of folding knife. Some carry them in a leather pouch or on the belt of their uniform or uniform pants. Other firefighters like to carry them in their turnout clothing or bunker gear in a pocket. I like the newer style knives that come out with the utility type of blade that can be easily changed so this knife doesn't have to be sharpened by using a knife sharpener or a whet stone. This type of knife we simply remove the blade add a new utility blade to it and we again are back in business with a sharp knife. The knife is very handy for cutting seat belts off of victims, for cutting carpeting out of buildings, and for doing anything along those lines that require a sharp knife. And it can even be used to cut wire that's a thin gage type of wire going in entanglement situations. The knife- very handy tool to have."
