So now that we're done making our toad home you might wonder what it takes to get it to come out to be a glazed, beautiful hard piece of pottery in the end and basically that requires a couple of steps. First we're going to let it dry completely, all the way, with absolutely no moisture in there whatsoever. It will be pretty brittle at that point so you have to be very tender with it. You put it in the kiln and you fire it once. With my clay body I fire to cone 06 which is 1850 degrees or so, and then it comes out of the kiln and it's firm, it rings, it's pottery but it's not glazed yet and it's not fired as hot as it'll go in the end. I will take wax and put it on the bottom, dip the entire piece in glaze and put it in the kiln again. At that point it goes to cone 6 which is a higher cone than 06, it's about 2230 degrees and that takes about 8 hours in my kiln, and when it comes out it's a completely finished piece of pottery with a glassy surface and gorgeous color.
