on 10/21/2008 I really appreciate this video because it addressess intimacy in a way that support the information that I am responsible for presenting to my Psychology classmates in reference to Adult Relationships. I've done many searches on intimacy and the majority of them give me results that focus on the sexual aspects of intimacy, rather than the broader elements concerning family, and close relationships.

"Ok we are ready to move on to the next and final stage of developing relationships which is the intimacy phase. Now when I say the word intimacy probably the first thing you think about is sex. Well it's a little different, yes intimate relationship many times involve sex, but intimate relationships you can have intimate relationships with anyone. Because what really defines and determines and intimate relationship is the breadth and depth of the information that you share. Do you discuss things on deeper levels, do you share feelings on deeper levels. You see you can have an intimate relationship with your parents or maybe your children or coworkers or neighbors, or people at your church. It's about the level of depth and it also involves the level of trust. When we have intimate relationships we start dealing in deeper levels of trust. I trust you more therefore I'm willing to give you more information about myself. And that's a wonderful thing, but what happens with intimacy as there is also risk involved. And by that I mean I'm sharing more information with you therefore you have the option and opportunity to take that information and turn it on me or hurt me with it, or disappear from my life after I have engaged and established this intimate relationship with you. And that's one of the reasons that people tend to avoid intimacy and avoid intimate relationships is because they don't want to get hurt but there can be a lot of joy that comes out of intimacy. So that's how relationships are developed. Now at this point relationships are either maintained or they dissolve or maybe they're repaired. There are many things that can happen but now you know how the relationships are established and how to establish positive interpersonal relationships."
