"Ok the first thing that we are going to do when we start to develop relationships and establish relationships is we are going to establish the rules. And what I mean by establish the rules are what is customary for your particular situation. Now several things we have to take into account here- culture, situations, circumstances, I'm talking about people that you relate to on a university level in college, people that you relate to on the job, people that you relate to in your family. How are these relationships established, what are the social norms? And I'll give you an example- professor, student. There is a social norm established that the student will respect the professor, that the relationship is not, we're not friends. We don't become buddies. There is a criteria for I call you professor, I refer to you as professor, I acknowledge you as professor. This is sometimes the same way in families. Moms and dads are not necessarily your best friends. They are your parents and that is the social norm, especially more so in other cultures. And there are norms for every culture, so we have to establish what are the rules for how close we can get when we develop and build our relationship."
