"Now that you've got your press kit, and it looks really great, you want to make sure, you don't want to send this thing out to just everybody because these things are expensive. More than likely you're not going to have a lot of money being an independent artist, if you are, and not everybody wants one. With the advent of the Internet so many people just like to receive an email that just points them to a place where they can investigate you or not. That's really great! I mean my costs went down from something like $3,000 in a year for sending out press kits, to about $300 when I started using the Internet, and that was, it started becoming more in fashion, probably about five years ago or so. So I'm really happy for that, but sometimes I'll send an email to people and they'll say "Hey, could you send me a physical press kit along with that? I want it to show people". That's really great, "Okay, cool", so I put this thing together, I put it in an envelope, and I send it to them. You want to make sure and send this press kit to someone far out in advance of when you're actually going to play a show because usually it's a promotional tool. It's not so much something that people are going to look at your concerts, they want to see you at your concerts. This is for ahead of the time getting people who are able to organize things for you, able to put on shows. This is for radio people, when you send your CD to a radio station to try and get it played on the air, you want to make sure and give it with a press kit so that they know some stories about you. This might be for someone who's interested in doing a feature article on you, but you don't just want to send these to an editor unless you know the editor at that paper. Those people, they are so busy, they want something short and sweet and to the point and the press kit is kind of be like "Oh my goodness, I have to go through a whole press kit". Don't bother them with one of those things and don't waste your money. Send it to people who are already interested about you and who want to investigate further about whether or not they want to feature you on their show or get you a show."
