"Now that you know how to hold the pick, we'll talk about how to strike the string with the pick. So, once again, you're going to hold the pick with your thumb over the top, towards the outside edge. Your first finger towards the inside edge. And, when you hit the string, when you strike the string. Again, remember, this will be a felt pick. You want to pick down with an even motion. You don't want to pick at an angle. You want to use this flat side of the pick, here, rather than using the narrow side. The difference is, if you use the narrow side, you get a very weak sound. If you use the flat part so that it's flush with the string, you get a much stronger tone. Now, as you pick the string, you want to go directly down (pick demo) which keeps that continuity of the strength of the flat side of the pick. If you go down and away, you're going to kind of compromise that sound a little bit and get more of the edge which you don't want."
