"Now, if you don't have a pick or you prefer the sound of your fingers striking the strings, I'll show you how to strike, first, a single string with your right hand. Now, again, you want to keep that right hand on the bridge. You want to rest it just behind the bridge, here, to give yourself some stability. When you're picking with a single finger you still want to pick with this area here. The same part of your finger that you would use to push the string down on your left hand. So, when you hit the string, your finger comes up and over the string before it. Now, you'll also notice that I'm not using my whole finger; I'm not doing this kind of motion. I'm primarily using the first knuckle from the fingernail, so you get that kind of motion, and a little bit from the second knuckle. Now, you can also use your thumb. Same idea using the knuckle that's closest to the hand. So you're picking, kind of on a fulcrum from that point. You don't want to use the wrist if you're just picking with your fingers."
