"Now that you know where on the fret you want to place your finger, you want to know what part of the finger you should use to press down on the string. Now I mentioned in the left hand position, that you want to keep your thumb in the middle of the back of the neck to allow your fingers to be able to come down and into the string rather than be flat against the string. The reason for that is because if you're playing with the center of your fingerprint here, you're not going to have as much mobility because the tip of your finger is going to run into the next string. So if you want that string to be open, you're kind of out of luck. Now the part of the finger that you do want to use is, if you can see that little indentation right there, just past the middle of the tip of your finger, before your finger starts rolling back downwards again. Now that will allow you the best attack on the string to come down and not hit the strings that come behind it. So that if you need to play that string open with no fingers on it, then they won't collide."
