"The basic movements in Aikido are circular in nature, whereas most attacks are linear in nature. An Aikido student, harmonizes with rather than confronts the linear attack and converts the energy of that linear attack into a circular energy. Converting such an attack from a linear to a circular energy, ultimately renders the attacker or the attackers helpless. In Aikido all attacks basically summarize as entering, engaging with the attacker, blending with the energy of the attacker and then re-directing the attacker's energy into that circular nature. In this way, it is the energy of the attacker that gets utilize as oppose to the person practicing the defense of Aikido technique. This enables so much smaller opponent, this enables so much Aikido student to defend themselves against a larger attacker."
