"In trying to provide an allergy-free or allergy-safe home, it's a great idea to have hardwood floors rather than carpet. With hardwood flooring, when dust settles on the floor, or any kind of food particle is on the floor, it's easy just to sweep up, and it's completely eliminated off the floor. Now having carpet is a completely different story. Dust mites, if you have a pet, the pet dander, all these different allergens stay in the carpet and it's very difficult to completely remove them. So because we did have little children, we did opt to have carpet in our home because of them crawling around and we didn't want their knees to get hurt, things like that. So we have carpet, but what we try to do is use a vacuum cleaner that has a special huppa-filtered bag that we use in it, where it picks up almost 99% of the allergens that are in your carpet. There are special vacuum cleaners that are designed specifically for people that have allergies, that I hear work wonderfully. But rather than investing four or five hundred dollars into a new vacuum, we've decided to use the allergy-proof bags within our vacuum cleaner. They tend to be a little more expensive but well worth it while you're vacuuming. When you do vacuum, it's interesting to realize that once you're done vacuuming, you'll see almost dust settling onto your furniture. So if you are cleaning, vacuum first, and then do your dusting because the vacuum has a blower on it, tends to blow all these particles into the air such as the dust mites and pet hair, what have you, settles on the furniture. So if you want to do a very thorough cleaning, do the vacuuming first, and then take your micro fiber cloth. I just like to add water to it to wipe the furniture down to get that residue off of the dust where it has settled on your other items in your house."
