Summertime, it's a great time to go swimming and it's also important to protect your skin from the sun. So, I'll be talking about two things. Chlorinated water and also sunscreen. When a child has eczema, or if you have eczema, sometimes the chlorine in the water can irritate your skin. Before you do go into the water, it's a great idea to go and shower off, get your body wet because it helps to almost coat your skin or lubricate your skin before you go in the water so, once you get into the pool, you're not sucking up all that chlorinated water. Your skin has already become dampened or moist before you jump into the water with chlorine. If you do experience some problems with chlorinated water, it may be a great idea not to go swimming in a pool. There's other options such as lakes or oceans to swim in as well. With sunscreen, a lot of sunscreens have fragrance, have a lot of ingredients that can irritate the skin. I've discovered that there are a couple on the market, that you can find, that have zero fragrance and that are made especially for sensitive skin. Once again, you have to check the ingredients on it because if you do have a food allergy, to a nut for example, there are some sunscreens out there that have nut oils in them. I know some people use sunflower oil as a protector of the sun when they're outside. If you have a sunflower allergy, like my daughter, it's not a great idea to use that. A dermatologist can recommend several sunscreens that will probably work well with the skin, especially if you suffer from allergies and eczema.
