"What you're dealing with when you have the distributor cap, the function of the distributor cap, is basically what its name says. It distributes the right amount of spark to each cylinder every time the rotor fires around and the engine cycles around itself. Depending on what kind of car you have, whether it be a four cylinder, six cylinder, eight cylinder, it has a contact for each cylinder and every time the button goes around it sparks off of the copper contacts inside of the cap itself. Sometimes you can have a high performance application for the distributor cap which is kind of smaller, like in diameter in size, the width of it, so that way it kind of shortens up the area that you're dealing with where your spark is contained inside of it. So if it was to get cracked or anything you would have like electricity escaping out and that would cause a problem, it's an issue of your car running right, because it may stumble or do crazy things if it is not properly sealed right. And that is an explanation of what the distributor cap itself does."
