"In this clip, we're going to talk about the proper service procedure for changing the transmission fluid in a standard transmission. In this step, we're going to talk about two types of gear oil for a standard transmission. You're going to want to refer to your vehicle's owner’s manual, or your parts professional to make the determination for you. What I have here is typical 80-90 weight gear oil. It is used in some standard transmissions, and most rear axles. What I have here is Mercon V automatic transmission fluid. Now believe it or not, this is what Ford wants put in the standard transmission of a 91' Ford Explorer. What I've done is I have a nipple on here that comes with the bottle, and I cut the top of it off. From there, I'm going to use a small hose. I'm going to slide it right over the top in order to give me a filling tube. If you don't use this method, and just try and jab the nipple into the fill hole of your transmission, it is going to spill on you. You're going to spill some on the ground, and you'll contribute to our continuing pollution problem. Then once we have the nipple on there, you're ready to refill the trans. These are the differences. What you have is plain 80-90 weight has no cleaning detergents in it; it has none. It has some anti-emulsification additives, which will keep it from foaming up, but anti automatic transmission fluid has cleaning agents, heat dissipaters, and special lubricants designed for your transmission. And like I said, refer to your vehicle's owner’s manual, or a parts professional for your specific make and model."
