"In this series, we're going to talk about some things women can do to keep themselves safe while traveling or when they're out and abroad. The lighting in underground parking lots is very similar to this, it's very dark, there's minimal lighting, just enough to see the cars. This is why underground parking lots presents a large problem. Not only is there a lack of people but it's very dimly lit, there's a lot of things to hide behind, other cars, there's doorways, there's potentially stairwells, elevators, it's a very dangerous situation. Even though a large number of underground parking lots have surveillance cameras, it doesn't take a lot to defeat that by maybe wearing a hoodie or a low hat or even a bandana quickly applied. So, and also remember, that the cameras may not be monitored, it might just be recorded only so that's no guarantee that you're any safer, it's up to you to protect yourself. If Zondra were to come up through a staircase in an underground parking lot and there was somebody standing right here, same rules apply. She wants to make eye contact, if the person approaches here, she assumes the defensive posture, verbalizes her intent to have him stay away, and moves quickly out of his way. 'Stay away!'. Okay, she does not want to let me pin her between this wall and myself where I can then hold her in place. She wants to move out in the open so she can get away. If Zondra should find herself cornered in an underground parking lot or other darkened area the same thing applies. Good defensive posture. If the criminal does not respond to her verbal commands to stay back, 'Stay back!', and he approaches her further, she can start hitting him with kicks to the groin, maybe a palm strike if he's closer, or even an eye gouge and then she immediately wants so strike and move out of the corner and get away back into the open."
