Series Summary

Sewing is an ancient craft that still has remarkable relevance in today's modern world. The art of stitching and assembling pieces of fabric together either by hand or with the use of a modern sewing machine is still a valuable skill and can be used for industry, home, or artistic purposes. Industrial sewing is usually done with the use of machines, but for seamstresses, alteration givers, and most casual sewers, an old fashioned needle and thread is still incredibly useful and more often than not the desired method since it enables far more detail. Tailoring and dressmaking require not only a needle and thread, but also other tools and materials that you can find easily at arts and crafts stores. Aprons are a great, simple sewing project that anyone can do. In this free video series our expert seamstress will teach you how to sew handmade aprons. You will learn how to prepare apron supplies, prepare the apron pattern and pin the apron material. You will also learn how to make apron straps and an apron pocket. Get tips on sewing the apron pieces together and adding the straps and pocket. If you are interested in a fun and useful sewing project, let our expert show you everything you need to know to make an apron.

Video Transcript

"Okay, today I'm going to show you how to make an apron, we need to figure out first what kind of material you want to use. There's all kinds of novelty fabrics, if you wanted to do a seasonal one, we made one, the style and pattern I'm going to give you is adjustable to any size. So I made it as little as this one, or, we have more of a pre-K size, or there's a Junior size, and there are all different kinds, this is a fun project to use novelty fabrics on. Because it's an apron, so you can wear it and be silly, and it doesn't matter. Here's a nice Spring apron. And you want to use something that's going to be solid and washable because of what it's going to be used for, and that kind of depends on you, how you want to use it, how washable it needs to be. And also you want to make sure you find a pattern that will hide stains because you're going to get spots on it, and even though it is washable, we don't want to have to wash it every time we want to wear it. You can make it as simple or as complicated, different kinds of pockets. Or you can even do, I made this one for a library program last year, with the theme was "space", and so I made a "space apron" with eight, yes there are eight not nine now, planets. Pluto had to get left off because they decided he's not around anymore, well he's around, but not a planet. So when you pick out your fabric, make sure that you watch to see how it is to be washed, and that it is washable. And that's how you pick your fabric out!"
