"Hi, I'm Dr. Joshua Vogel with Carolina Ob-Gyn, a division of Wilmington Health Associates and I'd like to talk to you today about potential long term use of birth control use and cancer. This is a question that comes up very commonly and there is a very common mis-perception out there that many types of birth control can increase your risk if getting cancer. In fact, if you look in the package inserts, you will often find that. This is actually not correct, especially commonly ascribe to birth control pill use. If anything, the use of birth control pills will decrease your risk of certain types of cancer including endometrial and probably ovarian. But it does not at all increase your risk of getting cancer. The reason this came about, this mis-belief is due to the fact that it contains estrogen which has been under certain circumstances and is associated with the development of certain types of cancer including breast and endometrial. But in the setting of appropriately prescribed birth control pills for appropriate patients, there is no increase risk. This has been a discussion of the potential long term effects of birth control use and development of cancer."
