"Hello! I'm Dr. Miguel Rodriguez. I'm a gastroenterologist at Miami Gastroenterology Consultants in Miami, Florida. Acid reflux disease and pregnancy it's a condition that is likely to occur. It will start pretty much from the onset of pregnancy and continue through the end. There are going to be multiple factors for the result, that produce that situation from the increase levels of hormones that tend to relax the lower esophageal sphincter. These hormones are very, such as estrogen and progesterone are very elevated in the pregnant woman and they will tend to increase reflux to simple mechanics, you know, the increase in size of the uterus as a baby grows will push the stomach over and will decrease the capacity of the stomach, so you will have more exposure to acid just by the sheer size of the womb as it grows. Therefore those things can need to be controlled with medications or with some other remedies over-the-counter."
