"Hello, my name is Barbara Dewitt. I'm a National Wildlife Federation Steward, with the Broward County Audubon Society. The types of flowers that attract hummingbirds are tubular flowers, because hummingbirds have long, thin beaks, and their tongues go out thirteen times per second, and they lap up the nectar from the tubular flowers. They especially like red flowers, orange flowers, yellow flowers, and then down from there. We have plenty of those flowers here in South Florida, both vines and say Texas sage, or salvia, that they enjoy. Having flowering plants in your yard or garden, allow the hummingbirds to go there, and pick off the insects that are feeding on the flowers, on the plants. Hummingbirds also are different sizes, so the smaller hummingbirds would like the smaller plants, the smaller tubular flowers, and say the giant hummingbird in South America, that's eight inches long, with a longer bill, and lives in up to 16,000 feet, would feed on different plants with longer tubular flowers. The ones here in Florida, the common Ruby Throated Hummingbird, feeds on our salvia, our coral honeysuckle, which is a vine, a very nice vine. It even feeds on red pentas, and it feeds on many of the trees, sweet acacia, and tamarind."
