"Hi, I'm Dr. Marcia Martin, and we're here at Safe Harbor Animal Rescue in Jupiter, Florida. Today, we're going to talk about types of heartworm pills available for your pet. The first one is Heartgard. It's been on the market the longest. It's an ivermectin-based product. There's Heartgard which just contains the ivermectin which helps to to control heartworms. They also have Heartgard Plus which has ivermectin plus pyrantel. This product controls heartworms, hookworms, and roundworms. It's also available in a generic equivalent called Iverhart. Next, we have Interceptor. Interceptor is a milbemycin oxime based product. Its controls hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and heartworms in dogs and puppies. You can start that one at eight weeks of age or two pounds of body weight. Next, we have sentinel. Sentinel has the same active ingredient as the Interceptor plus they add lufenuron. Lufenuron is a product that sterilizes fleas so it's a good choice to control heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and your flea population if that's a problem in your area. So, these products can all be started somewhere between six and eight weeks of age depending on the weight of your dog. They're safe. We give them once a month to to our dogs to prevent heartworms in endemic areas. So, your veterinarian can help you choose one of these products that is best for your dog based on his risk factors, his age, and his weight. And those are the type of heartworm preventatives available to your puppy."
