"Hi this is Zephyr Clarke-Dalberg with Miami Dog Training in Miami, Florida. In trying to figure out which type of breed is really right for you, the best thing you can do is really do some research. Think about your energy level, your activity level, if you are someone who likes to take long walks or short walks or doesn't like to walk at all. You know most dogs do need walking. There are some dogs that really require a lot less, because it's better for their joints. They are heavy, maybe they are a two hundred pound animal. You know you are not going to want to take them for a jog or a run. But, maybe something like a greyhound that really needs to run or a husky that runs thousands of miles pulling sleds. Maybe if you are a jogger that might be the kind of dog that suits you just fine. Sometimes bulldogs tend to be on the lazy side, kind of couch potatoes, so that is also if you are kind of lazy or don't like to move around a whole lot that could be a dog that is right for you. But, also be aware that there are a lot of breeds that have health problems more so than other breeds, so that is something to consider too. Because once you get your dog, and you are happy with your dog, it's a real heartache to have to go through some diseases that dogs are, some dogs or breeds are really prone to. For instance, boxers can be prone to cancer, German shepherds can be prone to hip dysplasias and other kind of issues. Bulldogs are prone to all kinds of problems, especially the English bulldog, not all bulldogs, but the English bulldog in particular they are known for skin problems, allergies, eye problems, gland problems, heart problems. So things to consider when you are getting a new dog."

on 8/10/2009 This is good solid advice. We have a mix chihuahua-terrier spayed female, best dog in the world. Then we bought a jack russell terrier, Rockin'M Yogi, talk about allergies & allergies & too much energy, and too many smarts to keep up with him. Won't give him up for anything but if I knew then probably wouldn't have got him. But truely if you have time and space the Jack Russell is an awesome dog
