"Hi, this is Zephyr Clarke-Dolberg with Miami Dog Training in Miami, Florida. You know, in order to stop a dog from jumping the fence, one of the first things you want to look at is your fence height. You know, if you have a dog that's a great jumper, you know, you don't want to have a four-foot fence. So consider having a six foot, possible a stockade fence. Chain link, you know, it really lets them see what's out there and possibly gives them more of a reason to want to get out of the...from behind the fence. So one, make sure that your fence is tall enough, you know, so the dog can't jump over it. Also, with chain link fence, some dogs can climb, so that's, you know, something you want to consider there. And one of the best ways to get your dog to stop jumping over the fence is through training, you know. Obedience training and exercise. Actually, you know, one of the reasons that dogs jump the fence is because they want to get out there and explore. So you know, by giving them exercise -- you know, enough exercise -- you can really kind of limit those desires because they're going to be too wiped out to want to go explore. You know, they've already had their exploration for the day. So fence height, fence type, and exercise and discipline -- obedience. Obedience training works great. You know, you can really, you know, create a bond that may not have been there with the dog before, you know, more...making the dog want to stay around you a lot more. You know, one of the other things you could consider is an invisible fence, which the dog gets a warning and then after the warning, if it continues, gets a small...a small little shock that's going to prevent them from staying away... You know, it's going to keep them away from the fence. You know, and also, you know, if you're there and the dog's jumping in front of you, which is kind of unusual, but you know, a long leash, you know, working with them in that yard where they're jumping over, a long leash can really give you a lot more control."
