Hello, I'm Alex Mauskop, I'm a neurologist here in New York City and I'm the director of the New York Headache center. Neurologists usually diagnose and treat conditions that affect the central nervous system, or peripheral nervous system, that is your brain, spinal cord, and nerves in your body. So neurologists usually diagnose and treat things like strokes, migraine headaches and other types of headaches. There are other types of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ALS which is also called Lou Gehrig's disease. We also treat epilepsy and many other less common neurological conditions. Multiple sclerosis is one of them; many other neurological conditions that you may never heard of, such as periphery neuropathys, inflammation of the covering of your brain. Well actually most people know about meningitis. That's something that's a neurologist's job to diagnose and treat. Pain is part of a neurologist's work, that is paid due to nerve damage. Again, it could be neuralgia, a general neuralgia or other neuralgias, painful conditions that affect the nerves, peripheral nerves. Other conditions that affect the brain include hydrocephalus, build up of fluid in the brain or things like abnormal blood vessels in your brain, AVM, arteriovenus malformations and cerebral aneurysms and a long list of other neurological problems.
