"I'm Dave Fadel from Fadel's Jewelry in Bountiful, Utah. Today, we're going to discuss the origin of the engagement ring. Some of the earliest surviving records we have record that the Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg actually gave a diamond ring to his betrothed, who happened to be Mary of Burgundy. And this be...started the custom of royalty and wealthy giving diamond rings for engagement rings at that time. The Romans were the first to wear the ring on the third finger of the left hand. And the Egyptians attribute this to a vein running from that third finger on that left hand directly to the heart. And that's where the tradition of the engagement ring being worn on the left hand, third finger comes from. And as far as a diamond being in an engagement ring, going back to the Archduke, it started there. And then of course, De Beers, in the late 1800s really promoted diamonds. And you've heard the saying, "A diamond is forever," and that came from the De Beers group, who promotes diamonds as being something that will last forever. And that is kind of a brief history of the engagement ring."
