"The range of a fashion designer is huge. It can range from being a fashion designer on a team where a creative director is kind of guiding and all of your input goes into one single line. You can be an independent clothing designer on a team where a creative director is kind of guiding and all of your input goes into one single line. You can be an independent clothing designer as I am in a small town. There is more work involved but the profit is much larger. If you go to a large city to make it you are going to start out making probably about a waitress wage and you may end up needing to compensate that with something else it is highly highly competitive so it is definitely a sacrifice in the beginning. It has to be something you are very committed to. Now you can also look into the industry and see icons like Coco Chanel and the Baby Phat industry itself is huge. There is also Frankie Bee who has a fantastic jean line and she started that line, named it after her daughter and started it in her basement. So there are success stories like that that started as individual designers like myself, found a nitch and went for it, started out not making a lot but have certainly reached the iconic symbol that others have that got there from starting from the bottom up."
