Hi, I'm Brian with ericksontutoring.blogspot.com. Today we're going to discuss what biotechnology is. So the name is pretty good indication of what it actually is. Biotechnology is using living systems, living organisms and developing a, or making products or processes from those. So basically it's using living systems that we encounter and taking advantage of what they already do to make things that we want. Three major areas where this usually is use is in agriculture, food production and medicine production. So a lot of times this, this kind involve genetic modification; so like to produce insulin, we've taken advantage of a bacteria and inserted some, some human DNA in there; get them to produce human insulin which we use for diabetics. That's just one example of biotechnology. There's all sorts of amazing applications and ways that it's being incorporated into our daily lives. It's definitely a new field and it's, it's a field of growth. But biotechnology in general is simply using living things, living systems and using them to our technological advantage. So that was a brief discussion of what biotechnology is.
