"Hello, my name is Dr. James Dee. I'm with Hollywood Animal Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. Diabetes in the dog is a very devastating disease, but a very treatable disease. The clinical signs that you would look for would be what we call polyuria, polydipsia, meaning we're drinking excessively, and therefore we're urinating excessively. It may or may not have weight change. You can have anything from the thin to the obese pet with diabetes. You may have tiring because of lack of glucose. The problem that we have with diabetes is we have a very high blood glucose and therefore spillage of that sugar over into our urine because that spillage, that makes us have to urinate more and also makes us drink more. And if we have a persistent high glucose in the blood and a persistent glucose level in the urine, we're going to be considered diabetic. Many of these dogs can be monitored and treated very successfully."
