Summary: Chinchillas originate in South America, where they are avid climbers and live in caves. Understand a chinchilla's natural habitat in order to care for it adequately with advice from the manager of a pet store in this free video on exotic pets.
"Hi this is Jennica from Pet Planet in Riverton, Utah. We are going to be talking about information on chinchillas. They actually are from South America from like Peru, Chili, Argentina. They come from the Andes so they live in the mountains. They like to climb a lot. They live in caves. General information, they need dust baths, they can't take water baths. It helps them lose their hair. The dust baths actually softens their fur and cleans them. They actually roll around in it by themselves. On the type of bedding that you would use they need something that doesn't have oil based products or oil based in them. The types of things chinchillas eat are actually chinchilla pellets. You can get these at your pet store or I think they do sell them at local grocery stores. A good thing to eat that helps them digest their food is also this Timothy Hay. They eat this about once a week. You can also feed them any green leaf vegetables. You want to stay away from any fruit things, nuts or anything that has too high protein.
